Pinterest just added the ability to not only pin images and photographs, but articles and text content as well. Though the actual implementation is simple and rather trivial, it marks a strategic departure away from their sole reputation as a photo curation hotspot.
It’s not entirely clear as to what prompted this, but TechCrunch specualtes that may be it’s to attract the male demographic who are supposedly more appealed by text content than image content:
Plus, being able to use Pinterest as a more visually heavy “read it later” kind of service could also broaden its appeal among men, who may have not yet found much use for Pinterest in the past.
Whatever the reasons may be, it now puts Pinterest in a whole new curation camp competing with popular social bookmarking services that already are on the market which have since replaced the grandfather of social article bookmarking, del.icio.us.
